Yin Yoga Therapy®

Sometimes when someone asks you how you're feeling, you often say you're fine, even when you're not. Often, something is happening in your body. Your body reacts, your nervous system reacts.

Pain, tension, shortness of breath, a change in your heartbeat, a sick feeling in your stomach, numbness, you name it. Your body is communicating.

These reactions, emotions, and signals have something important to say, if you're willing to listen. Trauma is stored in our bodies, in our fascia, and in our nervous systems; "Our issues are in our tissues." In Yin Yoga Therapy®, we explore the signals your body gives off and you learn to listen to what your body is telling you.

Thoughts, emotions, and memories are stored not only in our brains but also in our bodies. Trauma causes the somatic nervous system to activate the autonomic responses of "fight, flight, freeze." Because your nervous system often unconsciously recalls the event through certain triggers, your body becomes trapped in a stress response that occurs without you even realizing it.

There is a close connection between the state of our nervous system and our state of mind. When our nervous system feels unsafe, we automatically feel more anxious because the fear center of our brain (amygdala) takes over. When we are stressed, our thoughts are automatically more negative, impulsive, and more likely to focus on worst-case scenarios.

Trying to stop negative or anxious thoughts with positive thinking doesn't work, and telling ourselves to calm down doesn't work either. Telling ourselves to get over it or let it go won't work unless our nervous system feels safe.

Regulating our nervous system brings our minds to a more neutral state and teaches us that we don't have to fall into negative spirals, fearful thought patterns, and doomsday scenarios.

Our feelings, emotions, and memories are present throughout our bodies—physically, mentally, and energetically. These are all closely connected. From a Yoga and Ayurvedic perspective, this concept is important for understanding how trauma works in the body and mind. Psychological trauma affects the body, physical trauma affects the mind, and both affect you as a whole.

An imbalance in our energy system can cause countless physical and health complaints, but also impacts our mental and emotional well-being. This disharmony can be caused by trauma, but also by many other factors (stress, unhealthy diet, etc.).

During Yin Yoga Therapy®, we work on flexibility and mobility in our Yin tissues, but we also expose the deep layers of tension we hold in our bodies. We work towards releasing emotional tension and clearing the path where our energy has stagnated or created blockages. We give our nervous system space to release trapped tension, ultimately reuniting the pieces of ourselves that felt broken or unwanted.

Many ancient healing modalities teach us that our physical existence is brought to life by a dynamic energy—also called Chi (or Qi) in Eastern medicine. This energy flows through everything, from your body to the entire planet we live on. Chi is the life force energy, the breath of life, just like prana in Indian culture, pneuma in ancient Greece, mana in Hawaiian culture, Manitou in Native American culture, and more.

Chi flows through our bodies along various channels in flowing patterns called meridians. We work with 12 main meridians, each corresponding to specific organs (a key function of chi is to support the functioning of our organs). Keeping these energy pathways clear of obstacles and blockages is therefore beneficial to our health, and the exercises of Yin Yoga Therapy® actively support this process.

Yin Yoga Therapy® is a path to emotional healing and the release of energetic blockages, while reactivating the healing powers our bodies naturally possess. We work with asanas (exercises from Yin Yoga), the Taoist concept of the 5 elements (earth, metal, water, wood, and fire), the principles of Yin and Yang, Pranayama, and the flow of energy in our bodies, as used in Eastern medicine and acupuncture.

By moving from the thinking mind to our physical body and ultimately back to our mental body via our energetic body, you learn to reconnect and communicate with yourself at a cellular level. We work with customized exercises that allow ample space for any feelings and emotions that may arise. All our sessions are trauma-aware. I help you relax, open up, and reconnect with your body.
