Sound Therapy

Since the beginning of time, humans have used sound to receive information from their environment, to communicate with each other, and to heal and transform. Nearly all ancient cultures and indigenous peoples believed, and still believe, that sound is the creative, authoritative force that brought the universe into being. This resonance, this vibration, connects us with the essence of existence and reminds us of the deeper wisdom inherent in the sounds of nature.

We know with certainty, as the ancients did, that everything in our universe is made up of atoms. Each atom consists of a nucleus (neutrons and protons) and electrons that rapidly orbit the nucleus. The number of these particles varies depending on the nature of matter. The spinning motion of the electrons initiates a pulse, which creates a wave, and this wave we perceive with our human perception as form, or matter. It is our modern, Western science that provides the most compelling evidence of the power of sound to shape and transform matter, which forms the basis of its healing potential.

When pulse, wave, and form are present, there is Sound. If we compare the proportional distance of the electrons to the nucleus of an atom, we find that it is equal to the distance from the Earth to the Sun (approximately 150 million kilometers). In other words, what our human senses perceive as matter is nothing more than resonant electromagnetic fields, interwoven and interpenetrating, yet certainly a dense manifestation of SOUND. All matter is sound and radiates sound, although these sounds usually pass beyond our limited physical sense of hearing. Our physical bodies are therefore also resonant electromagnetic fields, as are our auras (the Hindu word for the photon radiations that surround the body), both generated by the atoms that make us up.

The science of cymatics demonstrates in the most visual way how sound shapes matter. Cymatics is the study of wave phenomena and was "discovered" by the German scientist Dr. Hans Jenny in the 1960s. His experiments showed that fine powders, sand, and iron filings, when placed on a flat metal plate and subjected to sound wave vibrations, organized themselves into intriguing patterns. The various substances concentrated in the valleys of the sound waves, emphasizing the areas where the sound was most dense. These wondrous patterns, also known as Chladny figures, resemble geometrically symmetrical mandalas in the case of harmonious sounds. In the case of disharmonious sounds, they are not symmetrical, yet they are nevertheless fascinating to behold.

We, as human beings, are constantly vibrating. Every molecule, cell, tissue, organ, gland, bone, and fluid in our body has its own specific frequency of vibration. Likewise, each chakra and layer of our electromagnetic field, or aura, has a unique vibration. These energy points and fields are just as important as the physical body, albeit less dense. In a sense, they reflect the state of the physical body, but more importantly, the physical body reflects the state of the aura. The science of cymatics proves beyond any doubt that sound, wherever it is placed in relation to the human organism, will produce a physical change within the organism and its electromagnetic fields. This change may be temporary, but as long as it persists, certain very powerful, magical things can also occur. This is the moment of healing.

Sound therapy is based on the principle of "sympathetic resonance." Resonance is the vibrational frequency of an object, and sympathetic resonance occurs when one vibrating object causes another to vibrate in harmony with itself, or matches its own vibrational frequency. This is how cymatics works, and also how opera singers can break glass with their voices or how passing vehicles can make your furniture vibrate. We have already established that every part of the body and its fields resonate. It is therefore logical that every part of the body, whether an organ or a chakra, should have its optimal, healthy frequency (vibrational frequency). When we're not feeling well, it's because a part of us isn't vibrating harmoniously with itself, other parts, or the environment. We can harmonize this dissonance with sound and intention, returning the parts to their harmonic frequency. By directing the right sound toward ourselves or toward someone who wants to (re)establish balance, we can return to an optimal, harmonious state.

Most irregularities begin in one of the subtle bodies. Our negative thoughts, emotions, and programming take up a dense space. They take shape as crystallized energy patterns in our etheric fields. These crystallized patterns gradually work inward and ultimately manifest physically in the body, our densest electromagnetic field. Sound has the power to dissolve these crystallizations of potentially harmful energy long before they reach the physical body.

Sound therapy is a holistic therapy that works on physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual levels. Here in the West, sound therapists primarily use a combination of voice, acoustic instruments, and traditional instruments from various cultures. Acoustic instruments such as the didgeridoo, Tibetan singing bowls, gongs, monochords, and tampuras are powerful because they are rich in audible overtones.

Our voice is perhaps the most powerful instrument in this regard, as it conveys intent more directly than an instrument.

Electronic instruments and devices do not have the full spectrum of harmonics (overtones), and are therefore limited in their therapeutic potential. By regularly using sympathetic resonance, combined with intention, we can vibrate faster at the cellular or molecular level. This is what is meant by "raising our frequency." The higher vibration creates larger spaces between cells and molecules, making us less dense, and making it harder for negative or intrusive energies to cling to us.

You don't necessarily have to be ill or need therapy to experience the benefits and transformations of Sound Healing.

Sound therapy can contribute to:
